Despite what the title, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” may have you thinking, you’re in for a surprise.

The movie is about Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) have been best friends since first-grade. Director, Kevin Smith, nails the chronically platonic relationship between the two, with their easy banter and comfortable mannerisms.

Times aren’t easy for the pair, living in a run-down apartment and sharing an old, beat-up car.  When the electricity and plumbing get cut off due to a lack of funds and a mounting debt, they decide something has to change.

They agree to make a homegrown porno in hopes of acquiring a quick buck and enlist the help of a few friends. The two decide early on that having sex on camera for money will not change their friendship. But inevitably, it complicates things.

When an unexpected delay in the filming process occurs, they move filming to the mundane coffee shop where Zack is employed. Arriving there after hours and with props purchased on the remainder of dwindling credit card balances the film progresses.

Jealousy, uncertainty and a newfound chemistry between Zack and Miri make for unexpected twists. Add the ensuing hilarity of the raunchy language and dirty jokes and I left the theater thinking, wow, I just had a genuinely good time.

An intricate look at what having sex does to a relationship, this movie was made for an audience that is our age. Accessible and relatable using it’s vulgar comedy to entertain yet portraying an endearing love story. If you’re looking for an honest laugh, you’ve just found it. — Andrea Gallagher
